The food industry is one of the largest sectors in Germany. The protection of the consumer‘s health ist he highest quality goal. Therefore, high demands are placed on the quality management systems for the entire food chain. Food safety means safe and legally compliant products for the end consumer.
The sector‘s primary task is to protect food. They also have a protective, storage, transport, labelling and sales function.
According to the European legislation, food packaging is a food contact material and falls under Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (“Framework Regulation”). This Regulation specifies general requirements. That means, for example, that, under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, no components will be transferred to food in quantities that are likely to endanger human health. This framework Regulation also empowers the Commission to adopt specific individual measures for certain materials, e.g. in Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.
A focus on quality management in the area of food packaging is indispensable in order to meet the requirements of legislators, authorities, trade and end consumers on the international market in a lasting and sustainable manner.
